    1. The RSO was an early insurgent group that claimed to fight for the rights of the stateless Rohingya (the junta removed their citizenship for being „Bengalis“ in the 80s) group. They formed in 1982 but went dormant around the 90s-2000s. Then, ARSA formed in the 2010s when Aung San Suu Kyi was the civilian leader/Burma was slowly semi-democratizing. The Arakan Army formed in 2009, and they are mostly composed of Rakhine; most of them do not like the Rohingya. The military juntas of Burma did most of the atrocities against the Rohingya, which is majority Muslim but has some Christians and Hindus.

When the current junta started instituting conscription in February 2024, ARSA and RSO [switched ](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/worlds-largest-refugee-camps-rohingya-mobilise-fight-myanmar-2024-11-25/)[sides ](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/myanmars-frontline-rohingya-fighters-junta-face-common-enemy-2024-09-06/)to fight with the military against AA and provide conscripts. While the AA has committed some atrocities against the civilians, ARSA and RSO have a pattern of [criminality](https://www.fortifyrights.org/bgd-inv-2025-03-18/), including two of the [largest stats in the recruitment of child soldiers ](https://docs.un.org/en/S/2025/247)[UN PDF; p.17-19] (in collaboration with the junta).

Finally, the Rohingya are not the only Muslim-majority group in Rakhine State. There are the Kaman/Kamein, who are actually recognized as citizens by the juntas.
