Never heard this objection before, other countries have done cannabis tests in traffic using saliva for ages without any big scandals around innocent people getting caught. Also slightly anecdotical, but as a smoker myself i would never in hell sit down behind the wheel on the same day i smoked, even if it’s hours later i’ll still feel dizzy enough to not function 100% in situations where i need to be sharp. I absolutely don’t trust people to smoke and drive.
>The NGO ReLeaf has slammed the government’s decision to introduce random roadside alcohol and drug testing, pointing out that cannabis can remain in the body for hours ‚without causing impairment‘.
>While the decision to introduce tougher drink and drug laws was welcomed by the opposition and industry stakeholders, Releaf Malta didn’t share the same sentiment.
>“The amendments introducing roadside testing for cannabis without an ‚impairment assessment‘ will create injustice for over 60,000 cannabis users. We remind that the presence of drugs in saliva does not mean impairment or that the person is dangerous,“ Releaf Malta president Andrew Bonello said in a reel on Tuesday evening.
>Prime Minister Robert Abela and Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri announced the proposed changes on Tuesday, in the wake of pressure from several professionals and lobby groups following a spate of horrifying road accidents this summer.
>The proposed changes, which Camilleri said come as police road checks have surged to unprecedented levels, focus on strengthening penalties and introducing new testing methods.
>Camilleri did not clarify what drugs would be tested.
>Bonello said cannabis can be detected hours after last use, but he argued it does not mean the person is dangerous and unable to drive.
>He said breathalysers work differently and indicate when a driver is not in a fit state to drive.
>He also pointed out that several requests for meetings with the prime minister had not been addressed.
>“Dialogue with us as you do with insurance companies and lawyers who have an economic interest in these measures passing. We remind that across Europe there are hundreds of court cases challenging unfair technologies like these,“ Bonello said.
>Malta became the first EU country to legalise recreational cannabis use in 2021.
>Under current legislation, adults are allowed to possess up to seven grams of cannabis and grow up to four plants at home. Consumption remains limited to private spaces and is prohibited in public or near minors.
Here is my opinion as a cannabis user: I welcome these tests but just like how there is a legal limit for alcohol, there should be a legal limit for cannabis in terms of blood THC concentration. If the drug test for cannabis is simply a positive or negative test, that isn’t conclusive enough. In blood tests cannabis can remain for up to 6 months. What if a blood test is ordered and you took 1 joint 2 months ago? Should you be arrested for driving under the influence? Of course not.
If the test for cannabis is a simple yes or no test, then the same should be applied for alcohol. **Remove the legal alcohol limit completely, make it 0**. Many cannabis saliva tests have a cut-off of 10 ng/ml, which is 0.00001 mg/ml. The legal limit for alcohol in Malta is 20 mg/100ml. I find it hard to understand why we should allow 2,000,000x the blood concentration for an objectively more dangerous drug that also impairs you.

They’re right though; according to Google cannabis can be detected on the tongue up to 12 hours later for recreational users and up to 30 hours for habitual users, with some sources mentioning up to 3 days. Impairment does not last for 12 hours after a single joint, max 4 hours, so we will be criminalising people who are not driving under the influence.

This is no different to „I’m a better driver when I’ve had a pint“.
And they’re right. We can’t judge impairment but we can avoid a free for all. Don’t drink or take drugs and drive, kids.

This is a knee jerk reaction from our shitty government due to all the illegals caught drunk driving.
They are omitting that most of the violations came from people that are illegally in the country.
The usual labour morons just demanded more restrictions instead of deporting the illegals.
This is a labour cheat sheet, first decriminalise marijuana, then let people grow it and smoke it, then start handing fines to the people that smoke it! Easy fines and easy quota’s.
They don’t care because they use cocaine and that shit leaves your system in 3 hours max!
Marijuana on the other hand stays in your system for days to months depending on your usage.
So basically this is a go ahead to prosecute people and label them as a criminal for „driving under the influence “ just because they smoked a joint 2 days ago.
And the labour sheeple asked for this? Idiots don’t even know how they will get fucked too.

They opposed it because they now a lot of people be smoking before driving.

According to a [Newsbook article](https://newsbook.com.mt/en/liar-liar-pants-on-fire-releaf-accuses-government-of-fabricating-road-safety-claims/), ReLeaf has been trying to get a meeting with the government for 6 months but have been stonewalled (wouldn’t be the first time).

Besides that, I feel that people are scapegoating cannabis driving as the cause of all these accidents when in fact they are mainly caused by drunk drivers and inattention. In my searching I found **one** article where it was the driver of a car collision was under the influence of cannabis – [but he was also under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.](https://www.maltatoday.com.mt/news/court_and_police/122800/driver_who_killed_two_men_in_mosta_was_under_the_influence_of_cocaine_cannabis_and_alcohol_)
