      This happened in Aceh (an autonomous province) which is very conservative… still horrible, but this doesn’t happen all over Indonesia afaik.

      It’s in Aceh, which is the only Province in the country to enact Sharia Law.

      Maybe if they moved to neighboring province (North Sumatera, for example), they can (and likely will) get away with it. You’d be surprised to know how many Indonesian LGBT+ are living in the closet.

      For people who don’t know indonesia. This Aceh Province has lots of autonomy rights and practises sharia law. It is not representable for the rest of indonesia.

      Former VP Kalla negotiated with the rebel movement to grant autonomy to that province to practise Sharia law governance. Thankfully it was due to his skill and wisdom he managed to persuade their original demand for harsher law that includes stoning to death and cutting of limbs.
      If that law were to happen , the whole of Indonesia would be getting a bad name evetytime some is stoned to death or beheaded.
      Frabkly, these people who show a fondness for Sharia law are basically using their religion as a tool to sustain and have control and power. Political islam is basically that. Nothing moral or spiritual. Just power and control entrenched by the clergy. Period.

      I really hope more stories like this become public so that perhaps it makes people change their tune about trying to be accepting of all religions and cultures. Some are much less tolerant than others.
