Monoculture should have a price because having majority of your farmlands dedicated to crap like canola is problematic.
Honest question: What’s the purpose of Canola in Canada if more than 90% of it is exported? Why aren’t we using it in Canada?
As for that „conundrum“, it isn’t one. Canada is NOT developing EVs and as such, we shouldn’t put 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs which would only made that type of vehicles more affordable to all Canadians. And by removing that ridiculous tariffs, the Canola industry would be able to flourish as it were doing before.
It is a false idea that it is a conundrum when the whole point is for Canada to disconnect its dependence from the US. Let’s stop shooting ourselves in the foot and jumping through hoops just to please the President of the US.
There is very little competition for EVs in Canada and the only way prices are going to be more reasonable is if we allow Chinese EVs.
The incumbent auto makers have just given up on producing an affordable EV. Canadians have no obligation to protect companies that are only focused on their next quarter results by selling yesteryear’s cars and keep lobbying the government to close the borders because they cannot compete. The only losers are the Canadian public.
The government has an obligation to protect farmers, but it also has an obligation to encourage competition so Canadians don’t hosed by the automakers.
