Der Wall Street Journal Kürzlich lief ein redaktionell unverblümt mit dem Titel: „Wir wissen endlich, wer Zölle bezahlt.“ In dem Stück wurde festgestellt, dass Inflationsdaten zeigen, dass Zölle zu den US -Kosten und nicht den ausländischen Zöllen hinzufügen.
Trump bestand oft darauf: „China bezahlt uns, nicht unsere Verbraucher.“ Seine Adjutanten wiederholten die Linie, obwohl einige beim Drücken kämpften. In einem TV -Interview gab Finanzminister Scott Bessent zu, dass Importeure – amerikanische Unternehmen – die Schecks an die US -Regierung schreiben. Diese Kosten werden oft an Käufer übergeben.
Rolling Stone fasste es schnell zusammen: „Trumps Tarife werden von Amerikanern bezahlt, gibt sein Finanzminister zu.“
Wirtschaftswissenschaftler sagen, dass Zölle wie jede Steuer arbeiten: Sie erhöhen die Preise, es sei denn, es wird durch höhere Löhne ausgeglichen. Der Zeitschrift Die Republikaner warnten, dass das Ignorieren des Taschenbuchauswirkungen politisch riskant sein könnte. Käufer in Lebensmittelgeschäften und Gästen, sagte es, wissen besser als Kampagnen -Slogans.

I think all Japanese know that residents are the one having to pay for the tariff by looking at the price of rice in Japan. The title of the article is wrong because it’s the „residents“ having to pay and not the „country“.
Trump is probably enjoying making all these money.
Tariff is another way to force a tax on the residents. Japanese know this because they are ending up paying more because of the import rice tariff.

And yet I’ve seen many right-wingers who at best are “unsure” of the impact of tariffs. It’s like people haven’t learned that Trump is a bullshitter from back in 2016 when he said that he will “build a wall and MEXICO will pay for it.”

This is silly though.
Sales tax is paid by the consumer, obviously. However the effect of sales tax is that the vendor, when finding the profit maximizing equilibrium price, has to take sales tax into account. Therefore they have to sell their product for less than they otherwise would.
Tariffs work the same way. If widgets from China costed five dollars, and have a 100% tariff, the cost of goods increases to ten dollars per widget. The demand is lower at the new higher price, and therefore China’s business suffers. Also their comparative advantage (slave labor) is nullified and those products can be made in countries with more expensive labor, even the US in some cases.
I live in a country that has always put massive tariffs on American goods, and now is all surprised pikachu when America puts tariffs on them.
If it’s paid for by the importing country, and that’s the whole story, why is every goods producing country scrambling and upset by it?
