US forces could help co-ordinate European-led air defence of a post-war Ukraine and provide intelligence and surveillance to assist peacekeeping forces on the ground, according to officials negotiating security guarantees.

President Trump’s commitment to help with air defence means American reconnaissance is likely to be involved in identifying Russian targets if they break the terms of a peace agreement. US pilots may be involved in flying air support missions but any role for them is still being negotiated.

Trump’s announcement last week that America would contribute to security guarantees was a breakthrough that added momentum to the peace process during a flurry of diplomacy, although he has given two more weeks to decide on his next steps after Russia refused to agree to a ceasefire and continued its attacks on Ukraine
