Yes, please. Best idea of the year. She is clearly the best fit for the job (job being anything but president of the commission).
Look, the best case scenario is that she resigns to run in the election, loses the election, and is stuck without anything to ruin.
Since the German president has no real power but is mostly representative, she could do less harm overall. On the other hand, we should really stop promoting politicians to new positions just to get rid of them.

Although „run… in the election“ is technically correct, it is more of an appointment because it’s not a direct vote by the people and rather an election by elected officials who discuss and agree on who they vote for before nominating a candidate.

Tbh, I don’t see it happening. According to multiple reports she is one of a couple of possible candidates that are considered. She would loose nearly half of her term and Kanzler Merz an important German partner since the possible predecessor wouldn’t be German anymore.

As a German I approve this. Our President is mostly ceremonial, while at the commission she can do real harm. Maybe that is why Draghi has been lobbying again? I’d prefer him if he replaced von der Leyen but anyone with a spine and maybe some vision/skill would be preferable.
