A 2025 study by Lucia Constantine and Yasmin Farahi, published under the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL), found that in just 2022, predatory payday lenders had sweeped in $2.4 billion from borrowers. Unsuspecting borrowers had taken out over 20 million loans that year, adding up to a total value of nearly $8.6 billion
Paired with an earlier study from 2020, the CRL found that among the most targeted were underserved black and latino communities, who, historically, have not had as much access to traditional banking services
