I mean it’s pretty telling that the people in favour of mandatory service for the youth are mostly all Boomers.
Boomers who never were drafted, the vast majority never served their country, never volunteered to risk their lives.
Boomers continuing their uninterrupted streak of being the most insufferablly selfish and entitled generation.
National service would be a disservice to this nation. Canada is a country founded on freedom and democracy, our anthem calls us the True North strong and free. Those are the ideals embodied by Canada, not fucking national service which would turn young people into slaves of the state for a year. National service is distinctly un-Canadian.
This is where I get around to thinking that something like National Service should get packaged with reforms or other policies that will disproportionately affect older folks to the benefit of younger:
E.g. virtually all economists, left and right leaning, agree that the implementation of Land Value Tax would be an unambiguously good thing for the economy and society long-term (better *and* more housing, for example), but current landowners would lose a decent chunk of the value of their property.
I think that would have to come with compensation for the loss because of how many people are reliant on it for financial solvency in retirement, but compensation at less than 100%, maybe 50% or 70%, would be a significant transfer of wealth from the older and wealthy to younger folks (and possibly allow lowering of other taxes for all).
Package that with National Service so everyone’s pitching in how they can to make our country function again and I you might have a politically, morally, and economically feasible policy package.
we really live in the age of division – left vs right, rich vs old, etc and now the latest young vs old. these are all made up storylines and conflicts people make up to stoke conflict so they can get more clicks. fueling resentment towards any one group is a dangerous game. By their numbers, Boomers have hurt the generations that came after them (ask Gen X how many senior level jobs they didn’t get b/c boomers beat them there) but in 10-15 years, the generational wealth is going to shift from boomers to their Gen Z/millennial grandkids and then who will be the bad guys?
Start the year of national service with 75ish year olds and work your way down, we’ll see how great everyone thinks it is when they have skin in the game.
There are a fair amount of modern democratic nations that do this world wide. I have no idea how I feel about it though.
How about saving for your retirement with actual savings instead of relying on your over inflated homes that come on the backs of the younger generations
That is INCREDIBLY undemocratic and against everything Canada stands for. I may be biased as an 18-year-old, but it’s a big fat NO THANK YOU from me! You can’t pretend to be a free country if you bring in slavery for the youth. We are not at war, and even if we were, we should start as volunteers only, and continue that way as long as possible.
He’s a bit of a one trick pony (if a fairly correct one in my view) but I absolutely love the G&M comments every time this guy has an op Ed published. The readers go absolutely apoplectic and demand he be fired, threaten to unsubscribe, throw chairs through windows …. the editors must love the clicks.
I like the national civil defence corps, and don’t believe it should be mandatory, but highly incentivized so that most ppl take part.
Does doing national service contribute to the development of those who participate?
Yes. It does.
Would it do that if EVERYONE was required to do it?
No. It would only dilute or diminish the value of this work for those who truly want to do national service work.
Make this category of work attractive, define the skillset needed, recruit people into the work and pay them fairly.
