    1. SS: trump wants to take away your first amendment right of free speech. Supreme Court has already said burning flag is free speech. Next thing you know he’ll start using the army against it’s own citizens and make it illegal to verbally criticize the government

      This is absolutely batshit.

No Trump supporter can claim that they support and honor the constitution. Nor can they claim to love the foundational principles of the USA.

This is totally legal and cool and definitely not something a dictator would do

    4. About time the American flag got the same protections as the flag of Israel!

      > 59% of Americans now consider burning an American flag during protests to be “always unacceptable”.

Americans are very authoritarian and don’t understand why free speech is important.

    6. Lets all burn a flag on a certain day and certain time to protest.

I don’t want to burn one but we have the right to.

    7. >The order tells the US attorney general, Pam Bondi, to look at cases where people burned flags and see if they can be charged with other crimes like disturbing the peace or breaking environmental laws.

Nothing will come of this… it’s just Trump flexing for the camera’s.

How about an EO to order DOJ to always seize the passports of foreign flight risk defendants?

Executive orders are limited to the powers of the executive and do not extend to Federal legislation.

He can put ink on paper but it takes Congress and Senate to make new laws.

Ridiculous to prefer an image that represents a principle (freedom of speech), to that principle itself. The flag only has any value if it can be burned. Otherwise it’s just an idol like any other, a way to give you an illusion of freedom.

Flag burning is permitted when it’s legal, but there are a variety of reasons to disagree with the practice. A strong discontent towards the action makes sense, if you are patriotic.

But when flag burning is illegal – it MUST be burned. The symbolism isn’t that we hate America and want a Marxist takeover. The reason is simple – because burning the flag is the proper way to retire it, and a country that does not allow strong political expression because it’s „offensive“, has no right to claim that they support the freedom of speech.

    10. You know what we really need – an order to criminally charge the politically connected people who engage in child rape.

We should be throwing that kind of stuff right back in his face.

This (and his cash bail order) seem to me like the Greenland and Panama Canal BS- just something he’ll pretend to do for a few days before moving onto the next shiny object.

Something like his cutting of agencies was always more plausible than this. Those agencies were largely formed and expanded in the first place in a similar manner to how Trump cut the agencies. You can like or dislike having big agencies, but there kind of is a question about how if those agencies could be formed, expanded, and given new powers with at best vague authorizations from Congress, why a future president couldn’t just be allowed to rip up the agencies without Congressional approval later on.

But these latest orders just seem like a total joke.

Joke’s on them. I burned over a dozen flags in protest right before the law was signed

While Americans are busy rebelling and burning American Flags, Trump will be burning the Epstein Files.

Better men than him have shed their blood and life under this flag, to defend the right of American citizens to burn it.

It will get overturned by the Supreme Court. This was a distraction for something bigger.

    16. illmatic_xxi on

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Trump isn’t necessarily the dictator everyone claims him to be, but he’s leaving the crack of the door open for it to come.

Oh? Too bad Don. Texas v. Johnson. Your signature is invalid.

I love America and what it stands for. Our flag is the most beautiful of all flags on this earth. Every stitch has meaning. Every stripe carries a legacy and a promise for a better future. And I would fight for the right of myself and my fellow Americans to express themselves openly, even if that expression is burning that same flag. Because at the end of the day it restores her purpose to be burned. The (the flag, Old Glory) is a symbol. She stands for purity, justice, and the blood and courage it took to bring us here.

The day we stop yelling and screaming and burning the flag in protest, is the day we turn to violence between one another. Its the day that the grand experiment of self governance finally fails. And its the day that liberty dies.

    18. I kinda want to do it on purpose now.. just to get my face in front of the corrupt Supreme Court

The people cheering for this are the same ones crying that all gun laws are a violation of the 2nd Amendment.

Remember when presidential candidate Bob Rumsfeld aired that old photograph of President Andrew Shepherds girlfriend standing next to a burning American Flag while protesting and his polling numbers dropped?
