Not with that attitude, it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. We can’t just stop trading with the US while our entire economic makup was designed to facilitate trade with them, but we can facilitate trade with other partner and by doing that, reduce US influence. Unless we are forced, cutting all trade with the US is moronic. However we need to remind the US that threatening our sovereignty and imposing trade barriers without warning should have consequence. Boycotting American goods whenever possible and establish stronger diplomatic and economic ties with allies should send that message. The fact that we are seeing more and more article urging us to resume trade as normal is a great sign that it’s working.
I personally have no problem opening up the Canadian market to U.S. access provided the U.S. drops all their tariffs. Of course the reason I say that is that it will be a cold day in Hell before I buy another American product if there is a similar product available from any other country (including China and I detest what they are doing to our canola exports). In fact I am cutting our some products which I would like to buy because the only product is from the U.S.
Unfortunately I know that this is not realistic for most Canadians so I hope that our Prime Minister can work some sort of deal with that doesn’t hurt Canadian businesses and consumers too much.
Does anyone remember the Jody Wilson-Raybould fiasco where they told her that, if she changed the law for SNC, that the Liberals would give her cover through op-eds? Just a blast from the past that I remembered over the last few days, at least since Carney went elbows down.
It is clear what direction the government and establishment in this country is heading. Frankly, I am not sure the government has much of a choice.
It is important, now more than ever, that the average Canadian keep their elbows up and buy Canadian and vacation in the country or, at the very least, buy stuff from and vacation in countries that aren’t out to destroy our economy.
The US has been in decline since 9/11, it isn’t going to get better anytime soon. Democrats have practiced benign neglect and Republicans are becoming increasingly hostile.
We need to lessen our reliance on them and the best way to do that is to build our own internal economy. Each of us can help with that…no counter tariffs required.
