This country has some perverted politicians. It’s 2025, and we’ve got politicians talking like it’s 536 A.D. and people should be lucky to be taken as a slave rather than to be dead. Why not just teach that slavery was inconsistent with modern notions of human rights, autonomy, and dignity? What the MAGA is trying to teach is not History, but Mystery, because if you go through their education, you will not know what really went on.

Except it was documented that some slaves jumped into the Atlantic rather than live as a slave.

It’s somehow even worse than I expected:

– Leo and Layla wonder why their teachers don’t want them to celebrate Columbus Day anymore and only want to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day/Native American Day. They say they’ve heard mixed things about Columbus’s character.
– The kids “travel back in time” using a cell phone to speak to Columbus.
– Leo and Layla meet Columbus on his ship as he is sailing back to Spain, and he explains his backstory.
Leo says he’s heard at school that Columbus spoiled paradise and brought slavery and murder to peaceful people.
– Columbus says he met tribes that were highly intelligent and others that were “vicious, warring cannibals.”
– Leo and Layla ask Columbus about slavery.
Columbus says that slavery is “as old as time.” Columbus also adds that “being taken as a slave is better than being killed, no? I don’t see the problem.”
– Leo and Layla push back about slavery no longer being allowed in the 21st century.
– Columbus tells the kids it’s not fair to judge him by the same standards as the future. He makes comparisons to Ancient Greeks and says that while he doesn’t agree with everything in their society, their achievements are not ignored.
– Columbus says that no one is perfect, except for his lord and savior, Jesus Christ.
– Leo and Layla travel back home and recap what they learned.

If „better than being killed“ is the metric we’re measuring against, then ANYTHING can be justified.

I wonder if that Oklahoma Republican representative will feel happy to suck my D day after day just because it’s better than being kill? And I can also bring friends, just to make sure he’s very happy…

I remember when I was a kid, we had shows like Magic Schoolbus, Wishbone, Reading Rainbow, games like Oregon Trail, Carmen Sandiego, and tons of quality documentaries that covered history very well.

What the hell happened to where trash like this passes off as something educational to children?

This is what happens when you rewrite history to protect the feelings of white people. It was never slavery or death, every able bodied African was treated as property from capture, if you didn’t want to eat, they’d take your teeth out and force feed you. It was always about breaking people into obedience and if they were too unruly for ownership, then it’s being worked to death in the mines. There wasn’t a scenario where Africans could avoid being capital. Each death from a slave ship was a loss in profit, so that was something to be avoided at all cost. That’s history, it’s cruel and bleak, we can’t sugar coat it, because we can’t repeat it again.

It’s interesting how defenders of slavery always seem to forget that enslaved people were human beings with feelings, hopes, and dreams.
