If I felt hunted and that nobody liked me, perhaps even persecuted for what I represented, I might leave the country and claim asylum.
It’s a facetious answer, and sorry to make light of it. I know there are plenty of genuine asylum seekers, but we also know the system has been open to abuse for decades, we know that there is a good percentage that are economic migrants and that people have honest concerns about how the fabric of society has been irrevocably changed by decisions of the political class over the past two decades.
Maybe word will get around to their mates on the other side of the channel that the situation isn’t as sweet as it once was and it might reduce the pull factor for asylum shoppers.
I hate how the people are protesting outside hotels for this. It is not the people in the hotels who are to blame for immigration getting out of control and frankly asylum seekers are a drop in the ocean compared to the vast number of migrants we get. Anger should be directed at Labour, the Tories and Lib Dems who have all failed to reduce immigration to reasonable numbers.
The hard truth is that people don’t want you in any country, and you shouldn’t have a right to go half way around the world to pick the nicest looking country to claim asylum in.
People were generally happy to take in Ukrainians because they’re Europeans, and there’s a good chance they are actually looking for temporary safety and planning to go home afterwards.
If you live in Afghanistan or Sudan there are a lot of safe countries closer to home with closer cultures to your own. The only reason for you to come here is because you think you’ll get more money, off the back of the European taxpayer, and unsurprisingly European taxpayers don’t really see why it’s our responsibility to pay for that.
The Refugee Convention and asylum status was never intended for people to travel half way around the globe to pick a nice country to settle in. It is supposed to be about temporary safety, not immigration by the back door.
This isn’t a new thing either, remember the New Labour years and talk about cracking down on „bogus asylum seekers“? The difference now is that the number of people doing it has become noticeable and problematic.

Honestly the whole situation is a shit show.
„We don’t want them in hotels,“ fair enough – so where do we put them? No matter what we do, they’re going to be taking space from someone. Schools? Gyms? Prisons? Army bases?
They’re human beings escaping the same sort of shit we’d want to escape from if it happened here. Is it ideal? Of course not, but we have to do something rather than let them starve on the streets while we process their claims.
