Naa no national one .That would be a mess .
The feds should support the provinces but the last thing we need is provinces fighting over what will be a national force thats not big enough to be every where at once anyways .
Honestly I’d love the Feds to take over Fire Fighting Nationally and remove it from Municipal and provincial budgets.
Make is a division of the military, cross train personnel to be able to fill in support when needed for both domestic and international fire events. And create a regular procurement and replacement cycle equipment. We could manage fleets of fire vehicles better, have more of them to deploy in times of need being able to store them on bases. We don’t need duplication of services with a National, and then regional ones.
We should build it but under the military. This allows us to hit those ever expanding NATO spending targets while also building a capacity we need that not every province or territory has the ability to fund.
To be clear, I’m not saying just hand it to the military. I’m saying set aside additional money to give to the military to do this.
That doesn’t make much sense in a country where forest management is of provincial jurisdiction.
What the federal level can do is to supply geospatial intelligence regarding extreme weather events to prepare before and act during „natural“ disasters.
Imagine a national firefighting force arriving in Northern Ontario and Quebec during a wildfire where everyone is bickering to see who’s in charge.
A federal agency that has a large pool of firefighting aircraft might be able to allocate resources more effectively than individual provinces managing much smaller pools of aircraft, but other than that I wouldn’t want the federal government to have a direct firefighting role.
