Private legal action from elected politicians is a growing issue in BC. It’s an effective runaround of legal rights that citizens have, and standards that government councils have, all according to a mechanism that benefits wealthy people with more money to spend on attorneys. I’m genuinely not sure what kind of government reform could stem the issue, the only solution might be for voters to reject any politician who engages with it as a rich bully who can’t argue on a fair playing field.

Of course, it’s no surprise that this is coming from Dallas Brodie in her sprawling mansion riding of Vancouver-Quilchena.

There are other levels to this news story of how the relatively lax standards of „public safety“ declarations get leveraged into criminal proceedings, or how these declarations and arrest calls are so linked to actions from America/Israel (as covered in prior reporting from Global). We act like a public service is making a declaration for safety reasons in a way that has no connection to freedom of expression, and then several steps downstream it turns out that police are going after people for relevant expression.

That’s something that Canada might be able to work on in the future, especially if we actually care about foreign interference in our politics, but it’s not the main issue with this news story. The system had been half-working in this case until now, because BC prosecutors recognized what was going on, it’s only the private intervention of Brodie that could cause new trouble.
