She’s kinda not wrong. The level of bullying WAS fucked up and it lasted years. It’s probably weird to talk about for someone who went through that because there’s a part of you that’s afraid you’ll reignite it again and basically open the door for round two.
Let’s not act like SNL is some bastion for the best performances of all time. Yes it’s got a couple of all timers, yes it’s got a LOT of amazing sets and incredible bands, but it has just as many stinkers and flavor of the week crap, too.
Yeah, she was a lame duck celebrity coasting on privilege, but it doesn’t mean we gotta dogpile her again twenty years later

Regardless of how I feel about her music and talent, I feel bad for her.
It was a super-cringy live moment that could have happened to anyone and she didn’t have the experience for how to deal with it. She paid a steep price… more than what the situation demanded. Probably due to internet fueled schadenfreude.
Ashlee, you became a multi-platinum world famous singer, performed at NFL Games and Saturday Night Live, and sold millions of CDs and made even more money all despite not actually being able to sing.

She just did an interview with Trixie Mattel and it was so painful I had to stop watching. The girl has zero personality and not a single original thought. It made me sad because I loved her first album.

Nobody should be taking the stage at SNL without years upon years of performing experience. She shouldn’t of been there in the first place. There are a lot of young women performers in pop right now but they have YEARS of experience. They have grown up performing and can handle touring a live performances. She had zero experience. Zero.
She couldve shrugged, she couldve done alot of things other then dance and blame other people.
I dont remember her handling the aftermath all that well either.

Its avoidable by getting famous because of your talent instead of your last name.
The Simpson girls were sort of like the precursor to the Kardashians. I think they were more famous for reality television, but back then you had to also prove you had some kind of talent and deserved to be famous, so they were like these industry plant pop stars and EVERYONE hated them for it. Jessica was a bit more charming and sort of owned that she played the role of „dumb girl“ (her chicken of the sea comment was legendary and gave Conan a ton of fodder on his late night show) but Ashlee just had absolutely zero to give and as soon as the culture smelled blood in the water they completely devoured her. And honestly, she deserved it. This was the type of music out there on the radio that made so many people flock to indie music and culture. Pop stars today like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter are WAY more talented with much better music than Ashlee Simpson and a lot of her contemporaries who were shoved down our throats. (that video of Simpson’s halftime show performance where she gets booed is a perfect example of this… she’s getting booed because no one wanted to see that shit at the time but she kept getting gigs and was a perpetual force in the culture)

Being booed by entire stadium is your cue to reconsider a singing career.

Honestly, looking back, it feels like people were way too harsh. Everyone has a bad moment, but to face that kind of bullying on such a huge stage must’ve been overwhelming. She’s clearly grown past it, and that deserves respect. No one should be defined by one performance.
