My father was listening to Prague radio at that time. They were even playing some Western music so it was like a blow of fresh air for soviet youngsters. And on this day music stopped playing and radio became completely silent. Everybody understood that something wrong happened.
Horrific, I’d say that this was one of the darkest moments in the history of our country. I can’t imagine what the people thought back then. How they managed to work up a bit of freedom from the regime, only to get brutally stomped out by the Soviets. By the way, I can really recommend a movie about this called „Vlny“ (meaning „Waves“). It’s about the Czechoslovak radio right before the 1968 invasion and their fight against the invasion by spreading information via radio.
What would the revolution bring?
As a Pole, I can only say – we hadn’t any choice, like the rest of Soviet satellite states (yes, Romania didn’t participed in Operation Danube, thanks to „independent“ politics of Ceaușescu). Unfortunately most of „freedom revolutions“ ended bad, look at Hungarians in 1956, East Germans were also rioting in similar years, oh and in 1981-1983 we had martial law in Poland (due to possible Soviet invasion, last time in 1956 they were planning to invade us). Communism was fcked up, thankfully we’re not living in that system.
Warsaw pact – the only military alliance with the main purpose of invading its own members to keep them in line and obedience to their colonial overlord.
And they didnt leave untill 1991.
Warsaw Pact forces minus Romania and Albania who said no. If Ceausescu did one good thing during his reign this was it.

Soviet occupation of Europe as a reward for them for starting WW2 together with Germans and switching the side after being invaded. And hypocrisy of west Europe and the USA, who allowed this.
To be fair, Russia did this. The other Warsaw Pact members were under military occupation.
I know the government of Poland back than was kindda chosen and accepted by Moscow, but it’s really sad that we participated in attacking our Czech and Slovak brothers and sisters. 🙁

My father did his military service in the West German Bundeswehr back then. (He also was fresh in the relationship with my mother.)
The Bundeswehr recalled all soldiers to the barracks when the invasion of Czechoslovakia happened and prepared for WW3. Everyone was very worried.
Except for Romania.

Anyone able t tell me what tanks are they using? Seems to be some type casemate tank destroyer which i am not able to recognize.
My closest guess is JPZ 4-5. But i am unsure.

Interesting detail here: Honecker (leader of GDR) refused to send troops not to see German forces again in Prague after Hitlers invasion (and Western Europes betrayal) 1939. No German tanks in Prague, that Mofo was aware how evil the situation was.
