I don’t think it’s an entirely crazy idea. I’d rather have experts running the show than a bunch of random parents who know very little about education and are usually just voices for the „squeaky wheels“ in their ward.
Honestly… I am so disappointed by my school trustees. Both completely ignore emails.. we are not talking about 1 email but 5-10. Complete lack of care, laziness, and incompetence.
Maybe some are good but the four I have emailed are garbage.
The NDP will howl about this since so much of the party is composed of former school trustees, but the general public won’t care. The turnout in trustee elections is always atrocious, and it’s common for people to just check a random box, since they don’t know any of the names. It’s a pointless position which only becomes of note when there’s some scandal or controversy involving in them.
In Ottawa they get paid $16K to have a Zoom meeting every month. (About what? I don’t know: school boards can’t defy the province or do much on their own.)
It’s a big draw for politicos preparing for a run at MP or MPP.
I’m fully supportive of this. The boards themselves can be abolished and replaced with a single school systems (with a separate french system for constitutional reasons).
Most people have no idea who they are voting for in these trustee elections and they have very low turnout and huge incumbency advantage so it can hardly be described as democratic.
I’ve taken his quote in the article and made a few edits in bold:
*“If it looks like we can deliver the product better, provide better outcomes for* ***taxpayers****, better resources for* ***communities****, and give* ***the citizens of Ontario*** *certainty, and if that means eliminating* ***MPPs****, then I’m going to do it,“ he said.“*
Let’s take that exact same reasoning and eliminate the provincial legislature. We’re on a roll. Let’s go for city councils as well. Democracy is messy.
Now, the province can set guardrails in terms of no deficits, easier ability to recall trustees (let’s also apply that to MPPs), etc.
