For centuries kings were deemed to be mandated by god to rule and to oppose the king was to oppose god. Separation of Church and State would have been deemed heretical at the time. In fact, for the colonists to turn against the King of England, it was considered heretical by the British because the British king was also the head of the church of England and therefore a representative of god’s will. Mike Johnson talks like this about US politicians being where they are because of ‘god’s plan.’
