      This is certainly needed to prevent kids doing a workaround. The paid VPNs don’t need it. By supplying a bank card you’ve already proven you’re an adult.

      ..and after this, I suppose people will start using Tor/I2P/Freenet; after which how will the government mandate age verification on a piece of open source software? And these services also provide access to material far worse than what one would find on Reddit or something. Government poking around with something it doesn’t understand and leading people to something far worse than what they were trying to avoid in the first place.

      Needing a VPN to access Wikipedia… Essentially pay-walling access to uncensored information. That sucks. Needing to tie your ID to your VPN service — that’s even worse.

      For context, even China doesn’t censor VPNs. I have a friend in China that uses them regularly to circumvent censorship. UK is about to get more draconic than China, just think about that for a second.

      Porn loophole, like that’s a huge massive concern justifying setting up a system that does far more to track and target people who have nothing to do with it.

      You could do something about food insecurity. Homelessness. About tax cheats, and stop cutting benefits for families who will lose people to suicide because of your decision to make it as difficult as possible for people to get the support they need.

      The children’s commissioner is a „UK Official“ in the same way the only son of „Steven and Sons. Plumping Ltd.“ who isn’t a qualified plumber and just helps out on the odd job is a „Steven and Son“.

      Yes there is a connection to the company.

      Yes they are somewhat occasionally involved.

      But their declaration that Steven and Sons Ltd are going to be branching into becoming electricians needs some context in terms of the company structure.

      Bear in mind, this is a restriction meant for *children*.

      They really think children at large are buying VPNs by themselves to go the long way round to access inappropriate sites?

      There’s going to be so many worse outcomes to all this restriction.
