What Labour need to do is to signal that they are a normal centre-left government. Voters see Labour as a party that looks after poor people. Labour may want to present themselves in a different way but this won’t work. They have to listen to the people. Welfare spending needs to increase. That means increasing the winter fuel allowance, removing the two child cap, and increasing disability benefits.
I’d pay for this by a small wealth tax, perhaps less than 1% would stop wealthy people leaving. That is proven to work in many other countries. If it’s a really really small wealth tax it works. Alongside that they need to raise money from gambling, sugary foods and drinks, alcohol and smoking taxes.
They also need to listen to those who still haven’t got the control they wanted from brexit. This isn’t just about immigration (though this is important), but it is also about giving people more power over their local communities. Labour needs to double-down on expanding the co-operative sector and on devolution so that more decisions are decided locally.
They don’t have to be hard-left as reddit would claim. Just do basic small things that will help people and make you look like a Labour government in the voters‘ minds.
Wild that funnily enough, a Labour government doing a vast string of un-Labour things seems to have disappointed Labour voters.
Budget shortfall? Look at what Atlee had to deal with and how his approach revitalised the country. We used to beat up fascists, now they are getting elected as M.P.s Starmer is sabotaging the UK like he’s a puppet for a foreign government. It is the one you can’t criticise without being accused of religious bigotry.
Maybe calling voters paedophiles some more will help?

People want comforting lies over hard truths. They want immediate fixes which will worsen the overall situation over tough decisions which will play out over time.
Not surprised, they are pretty much the same thing, only difference is one is still worse than the other but they both appear to be poor choices.

The trouble with Labour is they inherited a clusterfuck of issues, most of them Tory.
Austerity meant we failed to grow or recover from the previous recession, Brexit meant we shrank in trading ability, and Covid left us with a legacy of ill people and a fucking big lending bill.
All the while inequality rises to the point it’s a fundamental structural issue with our society, rather than some dinner table ideological musing.
And Starmer’s response is….. sensiblism. Tweak the dials here and there, placate, spread yourself thinly across all spectrums.
It doesn’t work. We don’t need a revolution, or some Farage jackboots burning asylum hotels, or conveniently ignoring the thermometers and reservoir levels. But every now and again you need to be bold, have vision and take a risk on jolting us out of our managed decline.
This will be disappointing news for them, as it will mean there are some people they haven’t managed to alienate or anger yet.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like a lot of the policies, but they’re still doing better than the Tories f me. Takes more than a year to make progress on 14 years of absolute ruin. Honestly, I think they’re just stalling for time to justify higher taxes. Perhaps with an actual budget they’ll be able to better? Tax wealth not wages!

Starmer is a continuity candidate. Same on Gaza, same on corporate tax , same on environment and Ukraine.

Comparing Labour to Tories is just sad. You don’t have to like Labour to admit they’re not in the same league of bad as the Tories over the past 14 years.

13% approval is actually much better than I’d expect after the year they’ve had. Unfortunately it won’t be long before the Labour MPs start thinking their chances of keeping their seat might improve with new leadership. It’ll work temporarily and then we’ll be back to our regular broadcasting.
