Ray Winstone erinnert sich an Frustration über „Black Widow“ -Fotten, sagt Marvel „nimmt sich davon ab, kulturelle Filme zu machen“: „Es geht darum, Tickets zu verkaufen“.

I’m not going to sit here and proclaim that there was ever a time in Hollywood when it wasn’t a business. Studios always existed to make money, that’s how they continue to stay in business.

So it always irks me when an actors or director opines about a time that frankly never existed as if it was the golden age of film.

The problem is that now we have the rise of the middle managers in every industry who have no business being there in the first place. Phil Tippett basically describes the whole process as it relates to VFX but frankly it’s a story about every aspect of the industry now:

Now they’ve gotten into this methodology where they’ll hire a middleman – a visual effects supervisor, and this person works for the producing studio. They’re middle managers. And when you go into a review with one of them, there’s this weird sort of competition that happens. It’s a game called ‘Find What’s Wrong With This Shot’. And there’s always going to be something wrong, because everything’s subjective. And you can micromanage it down to a pixel, and that happens all the time. We’re doing it digitally, so there’s no pressure to save on film costs or whatever, so it’s not unusual to go through 500 revisions of the same shot, moving pixels around and scrutinizing this or that. That’s not how you manage artists. You encourage artists, and then you’ll get – you know – art. If your idea of managing artists is just pointing out what’s wrong and making them fix it over and over again, you end up with artists who just stand around asking “OK lady, where do you want this sofa? You want it over there? No? Fine. You want it over there? I don’t give a fuck. I’ll put it wherever you want it.” It’s creative mismanagement, it’s part of the whole corporate modality. The fish stinks from the head on down. Back on Star Wars, Robocop, we never thought about what was wrong with a shot. We just thought about how to make it better.”

The rise of the middle manager has created this shit landscape of film we find ourselves in today and frankly will not improve until the entire structure changes. It’s not a problem that studios want to make money, it’s a problem that the people who are in charge have no fucking idea how to and are preventing those from doing their jobs because of it.

Imagine a business being concerned with making business decisions. Gasp! 😲

I truly don’t understand comments like this. It’s a BUSINESS.

I know I personally go to work every day for the love of the grind and craft, not because it’s „making money“

I mean…you took the big fat pay cheque didn’t you, Ray? If you cared that much you’d have returned the cash over your morals.

Ironic because one of the biggest box office bombs in history was the marvels.

What do people think they should do? Make the movies for fun?

Marvel universe films have about as deep a plot and meaningful writing as a little golden book.

I’m normally fine with Marvel criticism but…this is just stupid and hypocritical.

No one forced him to sign up for Black Widow (much less forced him to attend reshoots). If he truly believed he was missing out on helping make a cultural film, he was free to turn down the Marvel paycheck and do so.

Whaaaat? Their goal is to sell tickets!?!?

Go watch all the b movie shlock from the 1950’s and lecture me in the “art of filmmaking” and “how it used to be”
