      The Pan-European Picnic was a peace demonstration held on the Austro-Hungarian border near Sopron, Hungary on 19 August 1989. The opening of the border gate between Austria and Hungary at the Pan-European Picnic was an event in the chain reaction, at the end of which Germany reunified, the Iron Curtain fell apart, and the Eastern Bloc disintegrated. The communist governments and the Warsaw Pact subsequently dissolved, ending the Cold War.

      My 3rd grade teacher In Canada was taken on her fathers shoulders fleeing Hungary in 1956…..these types of images are powerful.

      And yet there are so many people that after watching goofy memes and propaganda pamphlets would argue to death about how fantastic life under communist must’ve been

      I was a 7 year old German at the time, with distant relatives in the GDR.

      I have barely any tangible memories before around the age of 10 but I remember all of this vividly.

      Germans were running out into the street, knocking at their neigbours‘ doors and telling them.

      And when the wall came down shortly after, people were clinging champagne glasses in the streets with tears in their eyes.

      It was the first time I felt what freedom actually meant to humans. And then the year after, Germany wins the football (soccer) world cup in Rome. We didn’t even know what to do with all our enthusiasm and optimism for a while.

      It was probably the last time in my life where I felt that absolutely everything is possible for our species if we just all pull together.
