US and European officials will immediately work on providing Ukraine with robust security guarantees to open a path for a landmark meeting between presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskiy, according to people familiar with the matter.

The guarantees will center on bolstering Ukraine’s military forces and capabilities without any limitations, such as restrictions on its troop numbers, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations. The aim is to avoid Russia demanding restrictions on the size of Kyiv’s military as part of a future agreement to end the war.

A White House summit between President Donald Trump, Zelenskiy and several European leaders on Monday yielded a clearer commitment from the US administration to help guarantee Ukraine’s security. Those talks allayed concerns in Kyiv and Europe for now that the US leader had tacked toward Moscow after talks with Putin in Alaska.

I don’t think we’re in the clear yet, despite the meeting going well.

Russia started this war to prevent the Ukraine from falling into the western sphere of influence, not just to steal land. If zelensky goes to Putin and says “we’ll let you have the territory you want but we’re going to pursue security guarantees from the US” Russia is going to reject it. Russia will continue to gamble on the idea their manpower superiority will eventually overtake Ukraine.

I think what’s going to ultimately happen is that Ukraine and Russia will settle into a frozen conflict similar to that of North Korea and South Korea. Russia will have its buffer zone, Ukraine will remain independent, and no one will be happy.

We must also acknowledge the fact Trump just, point blankly, changes his mind often. What he says he agrees to one week might be out the window the next. I don’t think Trump wants to further involve the United States in European affairs. His administration has been pretty clear to say it wants Europe to take over the burden of its own defense.
