Because Canada is too stupid to sell its product. Why we raised tariffs on China amidst a US trade war is beyond me
Two important lessons to learn and hopefully, Australia takes them into consideration:
1. Diversify export partners. Canada is learning this the hard way with the US and now China.
2. With China, you can do business with them but exercise extreme caution (now applies to US). Australia could find itself in same situation in the future. Access to their market comes with strings. Linked back to (1).
Between the US and China we’re caught between a rock and a hard place with some major industries squeezed. I guess we’re trying to appease our largest trading partner by spurning our third largest.
I really do not know another country now in the world that has trouble with all three of US, China, and Russia. Well, also not having a great relationship with India, I guess.
We are so screwed. Canadians on reddit seem to think canada can just diversify but never list who else would buy our stuff at similar volumes.
For example who would buy our canola to replace china? We export over 42b a year in canola with china being the majority of that. EU produces there own. USA does as well. India doesnt buy it from anyone. So who is gonna save us?
Time for Carney to get some actual deals done.
