Honestly, as someone who’s met Marit before many times, it’s utterly baffling how the party failed to present her to the general public. She’s very likable, a great speaker, and not this left wing extremist that people here accuse NDP of being.
She toured the province this summer to oppose Doug Ford’s bill c-5, led the fight against the greenbelt scandal etc. And what did we get out of it? Media ignored us! Like yes the party is guilty of this too, but the media not covering her at all, other than the 1 time she fucks up is honestly insane. It reminds me of the 2007 Ontario election where everyone focused on a culture war issue about religious schools getting public money, instead of economic issues that actually matter, but that’s what the media actually cares about these days I guess.
Only way to fix the tragedy of her coronation would be to boot her now. I know there isn’t much of an organized campaign at the moment, but by the same token they do need to wire up a convention where they can find a majority of apparatchiks willing to commit to Rita Mae Brown’s definition of insanity.

Second in seat count but way back in third in the popular vote. “Not good enough” in underselling what a near catastrophe the last election was for the ONDP. They have just not been able to connect with voters at all since their surge in 2018.
You have to wonder just how long they can keep bleeding support election after election before they pass a point of no return like how their federal cousins had been on the decline since 2015.
The NDP seems happy enough to continue with mediocrity, so I don’t see anything changing here. Yes, the results in February weren’t as terrible as some thought they might be, but they also weren’t good. They lost seats and vote share, and seem the farthest from government they’ve been since 2018. But I guess the other comparison is Crombie, and not underperforming and losing her own seat probably will seem like a victory for Stiles.
The NDP needs people who can speak off the cuff with conviction in things. Marit has decent policies and seems like she knows what she’s talking about but it still seems way too practised and rehearsed when she’s talking to the media or doing interviews, like you can see her trying to hit the next taking point.
Even the campaign edits where her people have picked out what they think are meant to be the greatest hits really falls a bit short in terms of like kind of stilted delivery. I guess it could just mean they need better media peeps but she’s the one ultimately approving the final cut presumably. It’s possible it’s all handled by committee since it is the NDP, but that may speak to the issue where it lacks a bit of that personality.
