Hey, ich bin Ken, ich habe diesen Comic gemacht, weil sie uns alle um Meinungen darüber fragen, ob dieses Schema fortgesetzt werden soll, und in einer unsicheren Zukunft für die Künste weltweit kann ich zumindest einige Erfahrungen aus dem, was passiert, teilen, wenn wir diese Unterstützung erhalten. Jeder, mit dem ich darüber gesprochen habe, hat eine ähnliche Geschichte, und wir wollen, dass es offen ist, um mehr in Zukunft zu erhalten, wenn sie sich dafür entscheiden, sie fortzusetzen. Die Umfrage selbst braucht weniger Zeit als sie, um diesen Comic zu lesen. Warum also nicht ausfüllen?

I fully support this scheme and it should be rolled out to more artists as a priority.
I fully support the scheme! think its much needed and the level of art coming out of ireland the past few years has been exceptional. Nice comic too as I didn’t know much about the scheme. One suggestion for this comic though. Maybe on slide four reconsider the part where you say you’re able to socialise without managing spending because of the scheme. Theres a lot of us working soul crushing 9-5’s and shift work and worse who still have to go about managing their spending and socialization while being entitled to nothing benefits wise from the government. Just sounds a tad tone deaf.
First off, I genuinely think the use of the comic worked better than just text. Secondly, hope it continues, i know all everything pulls for finances and decisions have to be made but we’re nothing without varied culture and arts. Did the questionnaire!

Hello! I’m the Ian in this comic Ken made! I’ve shared some of my work here before (2D and 3D greased up Mr Tayto two of my more popular bits).
It’s hard to describe just how much of an impact the BIA has made. It’s mentioned in the comic above, but the landscape in 2022 vs now has been irreparably damaged, largely by generativeAI, but also things like the various mass layoffs across industries, the rising cost of living, nobody has any money right now.
I used to make a steady, but pretty humble income on my own through commissions and supplemented by things like print sales on my Etsy shop. Then the generative AI apps burst onto the scene, and as you’d expect, a big chunk of people who used to commission artists now pay a variety of corporations to generate images instead (extra upsetting since those image generators were trained on all of our art without permission). Etsy’s marketplace is absolutely flooded with cheap AI slop prints, drowning out the actual artists in the search results. My sales (not income) there dropped more than 20k in 3 years after years of steady slow growth.
As a result, if the BIA ends in February, I’m not entirely sure how I’m gonna make ends meet consistently, because the professional environment I existed in has been essentially obliterated. It’s deeply frustrating that this thing Im driven to do, that I was good enough to pay my bills with, was fucked up beyond my control.
This is a huge reason why I’ve pivoted into 3D. Essentially trying to expand what I can make, but I’m a direction that’s harder for no-effort AI slop grifters to impact (hand painted physical art pieces).
And I’m just one artist, there’s so many more musicians, voice actors, writers etc in our country going through the same issues, who might quit making art out of necessity who otherwise might have made work that people fall in love with. Investing in our arts now will pay off tenfold in the years to come, as artists from all backgrounds could develop their creative voice. An example I always loved is something like Seinfeld wouldn’t have existed without artist housing that Larry David was able to avail of while he developed as a writer. I worry that as things get worse out there, without the BIA, only those from already rich families will be able to withstand the tumultuous path of developing as an artist/ writer/ actor etc, and that depresses the hell out of me.
While I support a non-means tested UBI, I don’t know if funding someones 3D printing hobby and budget free social life is where my tax should be going.

I don’t support this at all. UBI or nada. Basic income for the few doesn’t jive with me.
I’m very much against non-means tested state support like this. I’m sure there are plenty of artists who genuinely could not operate without this scheme, and I’m glad they can contribute on such an enriching way because of it.
However, the arts are often exclusionary, and so attract a fair amount of wealthy people. Anecdotally, the people I know in recept of this payment are well connected and wealthy. I’m sure they are a minority, but it’s disheartening that I’m paying for them to socialise without managing their spending, when that’s not something I can afford to do.
It was a brilliant idea. I’m unfortunately not a recipient of the BIA, so I do still have to manage trying to make art with working a day job. It’s as fun as it sounds. I know people who have gotten it though and it’s literally been life changing for them
This scheme needs to be extended. Especially in this AI era where artists are hurting!
Back in my day basic income for artists was the dole.
The irony of the machine deciding I wasn’t a real human on the first captcha attempt is not lost on me here.
I fully support this and think it should be expanded. As the artist who created the comic points out, it costs less than greyhound and horse racing and it definitely has a more positive impact. The cultural enrichment and soft power created by art cannot be ignored either. Art is vital.
What 3D printer and filament did you buy that are Irish-made?

Yup the BIA. What’s the point of all this money and growth and success if there’s no art to celebrate with?
