Gavin Newsom, as California unveils redistricting plan:
“We will not allow Trump’s Republican Party to rig this system and take permanent control of the U.S. House of Representatives. We are prepared and we will fight fire with fire.”
We need more kick-ass Democrats like Newsom.
PFAS_All_Star on
I see how this will go. In response to CA and NY redistricting, every other red state will redistrict too. Then all of the blue states will strike down their own state’s efforts and all of the red states will be successful. Fun times.

When Democrats retake the House and Senate, they need to repeal the Reapportionment Act of 1929.
The cap on the total number of House members indirectly hurts states with higher populations.

I did a little quick math.
The following states have both the executive and legislative branches controlled by Republicans and I’ve listed the number of seats that are currently Democratic.

1. Washington 2
2. California 9
3. Colorado 3
4. Illinois 3
5. Maryland 1
6. New Jersey 3
7. New York 10
8. Oregon 2
9. Pennsylvania 10
I didn’t list any states where the seats are already 100% one party or where the state government is split on the assumption that nothing would change in those states.
If all of these states were to gerrymander every single one of their House seats to their preferred party, it would be a net gain of 2 Democrats.

The House should be expanded. When it was capped at 435 in the 1920, it was around 279,000 people per representative, and today that’s now 793,000 people.

Better idea: take away ballot access. Democracy does not require a far right party.

This is why dems suck. Great that they’re off-setting, but they should be going for the throat. Don’t offset, fucking wreck them.

I’ve never met the man, but when I was living in Sacramento I had a chance to work with his youngest son, Dutch. I gotta say, he was just a normal little kid. A little excitable, about as polite as you could realistically expect from a kid that age. If you didn’t know who he was you’d have a really hard time thinking he was the son of a national political figure.
I’m not a huge fan of Newsom, but seeing him actually involved in his kid’s life and that he was raising a normal child despite massive privilege and daily death threats gave me a lot of respect for him. If this is the best the Dems can do for now I’ll happily take it.

ADD MORE THAN THAT, GEEZUZ. That’s not enough. You teased us by showing the whole state as blue. We WILL lose if you only add five more seats, cause they’re probably add 10 more.

That would be fine if it was just Texas doing this. It would be better if he just wiped all GOP seats off the map. Literally

Why just 5? take 6 seats. If they threaten to take 7 then take 8. Stop playing nice dems. The republicans don’t follow the rules, we shouldn’t either.
