My grandmother, the Austrian journalist Gusti Stridsberg, met Göring and politely told him what she thought of the then nascent Nazi movement. Her boyfriend owned the hotel Göring was staying in and told her that Göring had smashed up the his room’s furniture when he couldn’t get the painkillers he was addicted to. This was during the mid-thirties, when he was still handsome and not yet fat. She went on to live a very interesting life in Moscow, Spain and Stockholm, including a few weeks as a ‚guest‘ of the Gestapo. All this in more she describes in her autobiography ‚The Six Lives of Gusti Stridsberg‘.
