Was denkst du darüber?
Gjithashtu duhen marr parasysh edhe influancat e huja.

Tosk-Geg division is older but was accentuated by the Ottoman invasion. But tribal culture was created after the invasion. Correct me if I’m wrong, but most clans can’t trace back their ancestry before 1500.

The point about tribal culture is likely true, the oldest Albanian tribes all claim their origin during the Ottoman Empire invasion, not before that, so it is likely that the tribal culture was a reorganization of society as feudalism collapsed.
As for Gheg/Tosk distinction, that’s more complex, it should start by defining what does she mean by Gheg/Tosk? Linguistically, what we call Gheg and Tosk have been differentiated since at least 6-8 century. Culturally, Albanians have more ethno-cultural regions than just Gheg and Tosk. For example, Central Albanian Gheg speakers are not likely to consider themselves Gheg at all, when they use the word, they mean Northern Albanians not themselves. Also, urban Shkodra was its own thing.
Also, while they are considered a subgroup of Tosk today due to the language, Lab Albanians, Cham Albanians, Suliotes were more likely to consider themselves simply Lab, Cham, and Suliot in particular than Tosk in general. Yes, today all but Suliots (who don’t exist anymore) say they are a subgroup of Tosk, but historically they saw themselves more as their own group. And just like with urban Shkodra, urban Korça was its own thing too.
These kind of Gheg/Tosk distinctions have been more fluid.

I’m familiar with Clayer’s work and I don’t remember her saying that. It would be very surprising too because the Geg/Tosk disctinction is *way* older than that. Robert Elsie also never said that.
This strikes me as one those „Ottoman Empire bad“ posts.
A stronger tribal system however indeed emerged after the Ottoman empire.

It is well established now that the dialect split happened before the Slavic invasion. Approximately when the Roman Empire was divided into East and West

Gheg-Tosk split happens before Slavic arrival as Latin/greek loanwords are almost native in Albanian with slight differences but Slavic loanwords are entirely different in both dialects meaning different and later points of contact, also we know that our words to do with Christianity are almost entirely the same in both gheg and tosk meaning we were also already fully Christianized by the 4th century before gheg-tosk split which would’ve happened around 5th-8th centuries, also multiple Albanian tribes are recorded well before ottoman arrival in Balkans for example the Berisha are mentioned first time as a tribe in 1242 as well as others around 12th-13th centuries.

What is the evidence of this theory? What caused the Gheg-Tosk divide?
>What are your thoughts on this?
