      Because people do dumb stuff like go swimming in pools and think it won’t have a knock on effect. We need more reservoirs, and better pipes, a lot of water is lost with just leaky pipes you have no idea.

      Easy ! By destroying the heavy industries which needed much water, the system “ seemed” to be adequate and OFWANK didnt push the companies to invest in infrastructure, so monies went to shareholders and creative accounting . Result despite increasing population and leaks all seemed in balance. A dry year shows the system deficiencies and now the present Government have to fast track investment in reservoirs etc. pity still system leaks but shareholders need to be supported !! ???

      Not building any reservoirs for decades while the population has grown will do that. All these new data centres popping up everywhere don’t help either.

      Genuine question, are any reservoirs now being built, and if so how long will that realistically take.

      (And when I say being built I mean actually being built. Not like Johnson’s hospitals and what not)

      My great grandfather was a founder of the Fylde Water Board (Blackpool area). Typical of his time in the Victorian era investing in infrastructure. We have not kept up with that investment. Also we are a small island struggling with an increasing population and temperature. As part of my university studies into environmental issues I went round a few reservoirs This was I the 70’s. Even then it was obvious that we had ceased in such investment. We are now 50 years behind along with sewage and housing

      Take all the profits, hand them out as dividends to mostly foreign investors, instead of spending anything on infrastructure maintenance (check daily water loss from underground pipework) or reservoirs. Do this for decades and you get… another UK privatisation success story.

      One issue is a very large proportion of the population living in an area that has exceptionally low rainfall. For example London gets less annual rainfall than Rome does.

      Another issue is obviously privatisation of the water industry, which has been an unmitigated disaster.

      because no resouvoirs have been built for 30 years whilst our country has expanded by 10 million people since then, and were trying to import more than ever before as well, plus nimbys about construction of the resouvoirs.

      The Rich executives will blame immigration to deflect from the fact that they have been hoarding all the profits and not reinvesting in infrastructure.

      Resources can’t keep up with the growth in population. Hospitals, schools, police, prisons, roads are working above their capacity.
      Instead of allowing a huge flow of cheap labour into the country, along with desperately trying to build new houses, maybe do something about the migration issue and build more resources mentioned above

      This is where the money spent towards tackling Climate Change should be focussed.

      Rather than spending money transitioning to net zero, let’s accept Climate Change will bring droughts in the Spring Summer and hefty rainfall at over periods in the year and invest in water management.

      I stopped paying my water bill some time shortly after covid-19, because I learnt that my water company was dumping raw sewage.

      They brought the entire bill forward a few years later, after the company was undergoing legal action for this, I suspect they knew they were going to be fined and wanted money to continue operations.

      Well, you won’t be getting any from me, because I used a fake name from sign-up.

      I’ll claim that the guy on the bills has since moved out or some shit if it really comes to push and shove, but I haven’t heard anything from them for a about a year now.

      A few weeks ago they sent out an email that said „to reduce water usage, keep your showers to 5 minutes“

      Just so out of touch. They won’t get a fucking *penny* from me.

      The water situation is a specific example of the problem plaguing Britain.

      There is no long term planning. There’s no central direction for what we need and when we need it, be it water or transport or housing. How many schools will we need in 2035, how many hospitals, how many doctors and nurses per capita? The government should be analysing the population and the environment and working out what we will need in the future, then making sure that happens.

      Instesd the government simply washes its hands and says the market will deal with it. Sometimes it sets targets, but that’s about it.

      You get so much rain at certain times of the year know. And nobody ever really collects the majority of it.

      Because we keep building new housing estates, and no new reservoirs. Instead they are attached to diminishing water supplies which are ageing and limited. We don’t have a lack of water, just a storage problem.

      Poor water usage, coupled with no new reservoirs ofter the past 30 years, and a population that has increased 15 million in that time

      Need to build desalination plants around the UK coasts. If a much poorer country like Malta that gets a minuscule amount of rainfall compared to the UK can build them, then why can’t we? Malta is planing to build more. The whingers around the energy usage they use just need to shut up and put up because actually in the most part, they fail to offer any other viable alternative solution other than ‘build more reservoirs’, but forgetting that in order for them to work, we need rainfall, something that’s been distinctly lacking since March 2025!

      Here’s your reminder that Scottish Water is publicly owned and that Loch Ness contains more fresh water than all the lakes and reservoirs in England and Wales combined.

      As the article and other comments say. An epic failure to invest in the maintenance, renewal and expansion of infrastructure. As there isn’t a quick buck in it then no money has been spent.

      Private monopolies do not work, they are the worst system there is. They lead to the rentier behaviour that has allowed big profits to be made by underinvestment and environmental mismanagement.

      I remember reading something interesting back in 2014 prior to the Scottish referendum. A huge reason why the rest of the UK needed Scotland was because it was predicted to remain water secure far longer than the rest of the country. 11 years later, seems truer than ever

      There are solutions that are relatively simple, so in the Bristol area and 20 ish miles around, you have springs in the forest of dean pushing out millions of litres of fresh water per day, the pumps in the Severn rail tunnel pump out 50 million litres of water per day, these could be channeled in pipes running alongside the railway to storage facilities. Similar schemes could happen elsewhere or a national supply system set up.
