      Maybe if Russia could trade what little territory they have elsewhere for all of Luhansk and Donetsk, not de jure but de facto at least, then they could sell that as their minimum war goal.

      If Ukraine will only accept freezing the front line, then Russia won’t agree to it, because they think they are slowly winning in that sector. So it’s back to continue the attritional fight, get the US to back them in with secondary sanctions etc. But the US doesn’t seem to have an appetite for that.

      I can’t see a negotiated settlement that Ukraine can accept. That’s why they are so keen on a ceasefire before peace negotiations. They don’t want to fight but there is no settlement, so they are stuck.
