    1. For a role that’s mainly ambassadorial the fact that she said England and not the UK shows she has some work left to do.

EU has ‚lost its moral compass‘, presidential candidate says.

Brave take when Russia is actively planning to invade the Baltics in the next few years, and the Baltics are actively planning with the EU to prevent it.

      The mask slips again…..

She’s a tankie. Everything is the fault of the west, NATO and the EU. The day the hammer and sickle flag was taken down over the Kremlin was a dark day for them.

    4. She also said we shouldn’t trust Russia, funny how that’s not included in the headline.

    5. Criticising our biggest economic trading partners and the EU as a whole, you would have to ask serious questions as to her suitability already at this stage in the game.

The presidents job is largely diplomatic, and the last thing we need right now is one who rilies up and causes tensions with other EU countries.

    6. > In response to questions on this, Ms Connolly said: “Russia is conducting an illegal invasion of Ukraine – it must immediately end its horrific assault.”

And, Catherine, if it doesn’t, are Ukraine just to lie down and take it if NATO and the West are such abhorrent, warmongering entities? These ageing lefties never have a good idea of how Kyiv is supposed to keep … ya know, existing, while her blather amounts to „peace at any cost“.

This is an obvious trurth to anyone who has ever studied the basics of International Relations theory.

Aa for the EUs moral compass- is anyone going to really dispute that when you look at Gaza? If you think the EUs response to Gaza has been in keeping with our morla standards then you are probably not her audience…

Why did the left go for connolly man its fine staying militarily non aligned but I don’t want a president who’s talking shite about our closest allies when geopolitics are getting so fragile 😭. I dont disagree with her but these are thoughts you keep to yourself

She’s not wrong, look at what happens to countries that do. Perhaps she could choose her words more carefully though in her role.

“We don’t really deal with geopolitics, but also don’t trust those that do”

How long will Ireland sideline itself on big problems/wars?

For a presidential candidate it’s pretty silly to be saying the quiet part out loud.

Well that’s sealed it for me, I’m not voting for her.

Fair enough, UK, US, etc have their own agendas and goals. We will never be their first priority and our political outlooks will never aiign completely, but to say we cannot trust them is just ignorance and foolishness. Not what you’d expect from an Irish president who’s job it is to represent us abroad.

Also, I’m not in favour of war, but I believe if Europe sits back and does nothing on defense we leave ourselves open to foreign aggression. The best defense is a good offense. Yes, military spending will take money away from social programs, but we’ve had it very good in Europe, we need to protect that. France/Macron tried talking Putin or of his invasion of Ukraine in 2021/22 but taking doesn’t always work. Weapons are wgat is currently keeping 80% of Ukraine Ukrainian.

In relation to Gaza, France and the UK/England are starting to move now. It’s very late to do this, but they are moving slowly in the right direction. We have led the way on this, but now to call them out as they start to row in behind us is also a foolish comment.

      FFS.

This is an election for the Presidency of Ireland, not the Students‘ Union.

    14. Who is she speaking for ..? Does this show diplomacy…?
I would like to see her voting record in the Dail..
I bet people would be surprised what she has voted in favour of ..
