I mean… Trump is ready to invade the U.S. if it doesn’t cave to his demands. Why would Mexico be safe?

It’s a trial balloon with the American people. He floated invading Greenland and Canada, it didn’t receive the support he wanted, so those actions have gotten much quieter. Now he’s floating using the military within the sovereign nation of Mexico and seeing if that will fly with Republicans, donors, and supporters. The basis of a populist is to do what’s popular. Trump is trying to figure that out, and he does that through some odd trusting of his gut, which is what populists tend to be good at – reading the room.
Threats did not work with Iran, Afghanistan, Russia, China, India, ~~Russia~~ or even Palestine among others. There has to be a better way.
