Wish we stopped letting all these businesses becoming monopolies. It always end up being worse for us the consumer.
I wonder what bread brand was #1 Would have tjought it was Hovis or Kingsmill? Braces family over here and that’s probably the most bought bread brand here in Wales

Surprised by this, would not have guessed one of them wasn’t number one.
Also – is this really going to pass the regulatory hurdles?
And finally – if you asked me to guess how much Hovis bread is worth it would have been a lot more than £75million! That’s tiny.
No doubt that 75m will be clawed back from customers through higher prices now that a competitor has been eliminated.

Even the father of capitalism Adam Smith pointed out that its end goal is a monopoly and exploitation, and that capitalism only works when there are a number of companies competing on price and quality.

With how good bakeries are, there is no need to buy kingsmill or any of the mass produced bread.
I’m surprised Kingsmill is larger than Hovis as Kingsmill bread is ass.

The monopolies and mergers commission need to approve this merger which may take some time. Better for a bread manufacturer to buy Hovis – it’s been owned by various venture capitalist firms which hasn’t led to a lot of investment.
I’m very cynical about this…they’re not in it for the bread but to see how much bread they can make. It’s not all about the bread.
… and I’ll still be buying from the (supermarket) bakery for my weekly loaves. A bread monopoly of crap surely isn’t the way forward? The branded stuff is more expensive and worse quality than that baked on-site at the majority of points of sale.
One of the biggest complaints I hear from Europeans moving to here is that the mass produced bread in the supermarkets is utter crap, and it’s true. Buy bakery bread instead.
I love the part where I go to the supermarket, and realise everything I buy comes from the same three companies.
Why is bread so bad in UK in general? I mean, it’s okey-ish for toasts but it’s just plain nasty otherwise (pastries on the other hand are the best thing ever)

It’s a good deal but i suspect prices will rise in the short term – it’s easier to rise prices after taking over a major competitor and it grants time for them to realise the possible efficiency savings and avoid taking additional operating losses.
Bread is very cheap so an extra 5-10% isn’t something to be concerned about.
