    1. People here complain and leave restaurant reviews like “parking was atrocious, use a rideshare” because you might have to park 1 block over.

    2. Living somewhere where you have to walk more makes you walk more…fascinating

    3. My President told me we only have so much energy in our system, like a finite battery.

Key operative: „can.“ You underestimate my ability to not leave my apartment for days.

This is something I hope gets more study in the coming years. I currently live in an area that is a textbook example of excess sprawl. It’s impossible to function in this area without a car. There are only a few places you can walk to and it’s not nearly enough to create a sense of community.

      But things are changing.

In the past 15 years, certain areas about 10 miles from where I live got redeveloped with mixed use. And there was a greater emphasis on walkability. But it wasn’t until recently that the real value of walkability became apparent. I’ve visited these areas and the difference in mood, vibe, and community is striking. You don’t really need a car. Most of what you need (groceries, recreation, etc.) is walkable. And if you need to go a little farther, bike shares work perfectly.

It’s a unique experience and one I can definitely imagine living later in life. The only problem is those places are very popular, hence very expensive. Apartments and condos there never stay on the market for long. But hopefully, other areas take note.
