I thought charcoal was virtually pure carbon. Not any use as a fertiliser, not a good source of phosphorous. Does the term mean something else here?

Yeah, they tried that. They used waste products from sewage plants as fertilizer and ended up poisoning land with PFAS.
Just let some goats run around the land and eat and poop and after a season you’ll have a good field for planting. Pigs work too, especially if you have tree stumps and heavy bushes for them to uproot and look for grubs.

Making charcoal takes an incredible amount of energy. You have to heat it for a good number of hours in the absence of oxygen and vent any off gases. With chunks of wood it is like 6 hours.
For the amount of energy to do it with waste might not be all that much better than making ammonia as they do now.
Plus human waste is mixed with industrial sources and the supplies of it are horribly mixed with pfas and countless other compounds. I refer you to the human waste they put on fields for fertilizer.
