UK and European leaders will [warn Donald Trump against handing Ukrainian-held](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/starmer-trump-dont-putin-zelensky-russia-held-land-3854360?ico=in-line_link) land to Russia in an emergency call ahead of the crunch Alaska summit between the US President and Vladimir Putin.
In a virtual call on Wednesday, hosted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European leaders are expected to reiterate warnings to Trump that European security [“continues to be under threat” from Putin](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/starmer-trump-dont-putin-zelensky-russia-held-land-3854360?ico=in-line_link).
The EU, along with Sir Keir Starmer, will [press the point that the Russian leader cannot be rewarded](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/starmer-trump-dont-putin-zelensky-russia-held-land-3854360?ico=in-line_link) for his aggression and that any potential peace deal cannot be imposed on Kyiv.
One European diplomatic source told *The i Paper* that permanent changes to the border would not be accepted and land swaps must be off the table in the discussions.
This comes after Trump suggested on Monday that there would be “some swapping, some changes to land” as part of any peace agreement, ahead of what he described would be a “feel-out” meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday.
He added: “Russia has occupied a big portion of Ukraine. We’re going to try to get some of that territory back for Ukraine.”
But European leaders are understood to back Volodymyr Zelensky’s stance that Kyiv cannot cede control of Ukrainian-held land as part of any ceasefire deal.
A few thoughts:
1). The US isn’t “handing over” anything. If a deal is reached it will be based on a middle ground both sides agree to.
2). Russia is gaining territory month by month and is a stronger bargaining position now then they were ~6 months ago when Trump took office. There is a manpower imbalance that makes it unlikely imo that Ukraine is ever really able to push that line meaningfully back, and im doubtful sanctions can really force Russia to agree to give much back.
3). European leaders just very publicly distanced themselves from the US in regards to Israel and took steps that in the US view at least threw a wrench into that ceasefire progress.
I would expect the US willingness to do favors for or to listen to European leaders to be drastically lower than it was a month ago.
Putin is awful and Ukraine is fighting a just war. To add, Trump has been awful on this conflict. Even so, the odds are heavy that the longer this goes on the worse position Ukraine is in for negotiating.
If Trump is able to give foreign land to another foreign government, who’s to stop Orban from giving Texas back to Mexico?
Trump knows the rest of the world won’t accept this. It’s the trump/Putin coalition biding time, staving off sanctions on Russia and planning how to screw over Ukraine.
When does Europe learn that trump is a man child with the intellect of a 14 year old boy?
