Even Carney gave up his British and Irish citizenships before becoming PM. So for this guy to say „no reason“ when the US has literally threatened annexation is borderline treason.
What a nothing burger. Are we going to start doing McCarthy style witch hunts for dual loyalties on everyone now?
On the one hand, dual citizenship is something that can only really exist in a friendlier, more cosmopolitan , and more positive-sum world than that which the leading powers of the earth are striving to create.
On the other hand, you all probably have no idea how much of a pain-in-the-ass the United States makes it to rid yourself of their citizenship
when energy and other natural resources are central to the issues of sovereignty and national security, loyalty should be paramount. he can keep his dual loyalty just not in a top position
What a big pile of nonsense. It was stupid that Carney had to renounce his UK and Irish citizenship, and it’s stupid to call call for that here too. This is just manufactured outrage for the sake of political drama.
Michelle Rempel has lived in Oklahoma for long enough to apply for US citizenship. Are we going to report her to ICE?
The big issue with politicians is not their loyalty to another country, it’s their loyalty to their own private interests, i.e., corruption. You’re not gonna make a politician loyal to canada just by having them revoke their citizenship to another country. Our „loyal to canada“ politicians have sold us out to other countries plenty of times
What does Andrew Sheer have to say about this?
Canadas has a history of having high profile national leaders holding dual citizenship;
“……former Canadian Prime Minister John Turner was born in the United Kingdom and still retained his dual citizenship.
Stéphane Dion, former head of the Liberal Party of Canada and the previous leader of the official opposition, holds dual citizenship with France as a result of his mother’s nationality; Dion nonetheless indicated a willingness to renounce French citizenship if a significant number of Canadians viewed it negatively.
[113] Thomas Mulcair, former Leader of the New Democratic Party and former leader of the Official Opposition in the Canadian House of Commons also holds dual citizenship with France.”
Michelle Jean was Governor General while holding French citizenship.
Canadas energy minister is not “in sync” with Trump and the GOP policies and priorities.
That’s the important point here.
I’m more concerned when a national leader opposes measures that enhance Canadas national security interests.
For example defying a recommendation from a commission of inquiry, a recommendation promoted by Canadas security agencies, is more concerning than dual citizenship ( ie recommendation that all party leaders obtain security clearance, receive briefings, work with agencies to protect Canadian interests….).
Danielle Smith comments about Pollievre being in sync with Trump ( both are right wing populists) is more concerning than dual citizenship.
“So I would think that there’d be, there’s probably still always going to be areas that are skirmishes or disputes about particular industries when it comes to the border, but I would say, on balance, the perspective that Pierre would bring would be very much in sync with, I think…the new direction in America,” she added. “And I think we’d have a really great relationship for the period of time they’re both in.”
