Sources below: EU data is an aggregate of the current member nations dating back to 1960, the first year all current member counties have data. In 2024, US: 3.628 million births (vs a peak of 4.316 in 2007), EU: 3.556 million (vs a peak of 6.796 in 1964).

Given the state of the states, I don’t think that’s a positive thing.
The EU did also lose the UK a few years ago which explains a fair drop in number.
More Americans, more Russians and more Chinese is a threat to the world.

If you want to stop birthrates declining, stop electing far-right parties who support billionaires (looking at you PVV and Finns) and fake Social Democrats who are actually Neoliberals (looking at you SPD), elect true working class champions who don’t blame migrants for everything that is happening, but actually solves the problems.
White births are declining in the US as well. Only 19% of newborns in Cali are white.
Relatedly, the EU had [less than 200k net immigrants in 2024](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SM.POP.NETM?locations=EU). The US had [2.6 million net immigrants](https://www.frbsf.org/research-and-insights/blog/sf-fed-blog/2025/07/17/updated-estimates-of-net-international-migration/) in 2024. Even though net immigration to the US is looking like it will be closer to 1 million in 2025 due to Trump’s policies, it’s still dwarfing the EU’s net immigration.
Note that EU population is some 120 milion people larger, so the births per capita are way lower in Europe
Land prices in Europe are way too high. Young people aren’t having families while their stuck in mum and dad’s box room or they are stretching the last few crumbs of their wages to last to payday because of rent taking almost all wages. EU countries and UK need to start passing laws on multiple ownerships. Make it so unless you are building new homes you can’t purchase a 3rd property. Overtime houses will move from portfolio back to individual or public ownership. Property will be affordable and young people will start having children again. But that won’t happen until the greedy „I’m alright“ generation declines enough to lose political control

Genuine question – why was the birth rate so low in the 70s in the US? Was it some sort of response to Vietnam / I’m not sending my child to get signed up in some war? Or is it economic reasons?
Thanks to the us we can’t afford to have baby’s anynore.

People have been ringing the alarm bell about Europe demography for decades.
We are entering the find out phase. I love Europe but this may be its biggest challenge for the 21st century

The more developed a nation is, the less births they have. So this makes sense.
Does this factor in babies and or mothers that survive because the number of infant and maternal mortality rates is on the rise in the US and it’s about to get a lot worse.
How many millions don’t exist because of the financial crisis?
I am in my mid twenties, still in education and can’t afford to move out because apartments in my city have become unaffordable. Forget homeownership, I can’t even afford to dream about it. I am finishing my masters and I am already get told that I won’t find a job anyway because of AI, taxes will probably rise again because the boomers need their pensions while I will never see a cent of the money I am paying in. And then there are a myriad of other reasons like climate change, rise of fascism and religious extremism, rise of poverty that make having children just incredibly unappealing.
