A recently [published](https://psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fabn0001013) study says there is „basically zero“ correlation between data coming from wearable sensors and self-reported stress levels. However, smartwatches and wearable gadgets aren’t entirely useless if the user is well aware of the device’s limitations.
The Dutch study tracked stress, fatigue, and sleep data for three months on 800 young adults, using Garmin Vivosmart 4 activity trackers. The researchers asked the study’s participants to report how stressed, fatigued, or sleepy they felt four times per day.
After cross-referencing the data, the researchers discovered that little correlation existed between the data and the participants‘ personal experience. None of the 800 subjects got a „stress score“ on their tracker that matched the level of stress they were feeling. Furthermore, a quarter of the participants were feeling stressed or relaxed while their smartwatches were measuring exactly the opposite.
Co-author Eiko Fried noted that the study’s results aren’t surprising. The Garmin watch they used measures heart rate, and this particular indicator has nothing to do with the actual emotions felt by a person. For example, heart rate usually goes up just as much during sexual arousal as when someone is angry.

Im pretty sure I know when my own self is stressed and dont need a gadget to tell me. We need less screens, and more self awareness, and in the moment mindfulness please.

I don’t understand the point of this study. No device claims they can measure psychological stress and they clearly state that the devices measure physiological stress. Of course the measurements wouldn’t correlate how stressed people feel.

mine measures it by measuring the HVR (hearth variability rate) but I don’t have found any relationship between when the watch says i’m stressed to when i’m stressed for real (even after stressful events where i literally had palpitations) so…

One time i was literally mid-tp-wipe when my fitbt registered i had hit my step goal. Now its just a cheap digital watch.

A lot of the new watches claim to measure stress based on fluctions in heart rate and O2. This is what it is referencing. It’s listed next to your resting heart rate and steps.

Man if only there were some way to tell if I were stressed. Because, clearly, my tensed muscles, short fuse, strong desire for a vacation, inability to sleep soundly at night, constant humming in my head, heart palpitations, excessive reliance on calming drugs, and sheer exhaustion from life were for sure sending me some real mixed signals on that front!

It always amazes me what smart watches claim to know, vs what they get right. My watch fails to detect I’m walking half the time I walk the dogs, even though the phone told it we left the house and we follow a consistent (and long) route.
I feel like there is some potential there. But they would need to poll the sensors much more often. And probably add in a few more (skin temp, air temp, skin resistance or sweat, etc).
They even fail to detect sleep apnea, something that they should be able to get right some of the time. I had a medical sleep apnea tester that was more or less a ring, but it burned through its much larger battery in 12 hours by polling constantly for o2 and pulse.
