      This is for Type 1 Diabetes where the insulin producing cells have been destroyed. Type 2 with it’s insulin resistance would not respond to this therapy. That being said, it’s incredibly promising.

      I’ve been type 1 diabetic since I was 3 years old and if this becomes a viable, available treatment I’d be clamoring to be near the front of the queue

      I’ve been pretty convinced we will find a cure for type 1 in my lifetime. I wonder in this crispr case if there is potential for these donor cells to become cancerous and the crispr deletes disable our bodies immune system from recognition, possibly making a more insidious type of cancer.

      This is huge. For decades, type 1 diabetes treatment has been stuck in a loop of insulin injections, pumps and transplants that require lifelong immune suppression. 

      If we can gene-edit donor cells to be “invisible” to the immune system we’re not just talking about better diabetes care 

      we’re talking about a functional cure without the downsides of immunosuppressants. 

      The same approach could one day apply to other autoimmune diseases and even organ transplants. 

      We’re basically entering an era where “replacement parts” can be custom-tuned for your body.
