Pretty sure there’s a more immediate threat with respect to corrupting democracy facing Canada at the moment.
Not saying China isn’t a problem, but I’m not so sure it’s the most pressing and immediate problem on the corrupting democracy front.
We can’t be naive.
At the same time, we also no longer need to act like the US’s devoted lap dog, yapping away at China and acting tough. The Meng fiasco as a case in point, where our line was that we were required to hold her to face justice in the US, and then she was just used in a bargain that we barely got a piece of. Or with cheap EVs. Open up trade.
Threat to our North? What about the threat to our South? Canada’s greatest security challenge is and has always been the United States. The only other military power capable of in anyway balancing against the American threat is China.
On foreign interference, the whole reason the Trudeau government baulked at implementing an actual foreign agent registry to restrict this activity, is that it would out all the American agents riddled throughout our government.
I’m not suggesting we invite China to plant a PLAN base on Vancouver island any time soon, but could we at least stop participating in America’s threats of war in the South China Sea?
