Why can’t each province just elect their members by proportional representation? Does it really matter that we have individual ridings? My local MP is great but I don’t think he’s representing our riding specifically but moreso the province and its interests.
That doesn’t mean that some of the rules it takes advantage of, shouldn’t be tweaked.
For example, no two candidates in the same riding should share an official agent. Yes, political parties will use the same agent for multiple candidates in different ridings, but that’s an efficient use of resources for candidates that are not each other’s local opponent. Sharing an official agent in the same riding feels like it puts the agent in a conflict of interest.
While I don’t think that the number of nomination signatures should be increased, perhaps in a post election audit if is found that two candidates have more than 20% of signatures in common, there should be a monetary fine.
I will say I don’t think it’s particularly effective. If you just piss people off, they’re not going to care about your point.
