The Trump Corridor deal signed by Azerbaijan & Armenia changes Iran’s NW frontier & cuts its direct access to Europe.
For Iran and Russia, the project represents far more than an infrastructure venture. Strategically, it offers a direct bypass that could weaken their longstanding dominance in the region, potentially shifting the geopolitical balance towards the United States.
Ali Akbar Velayati, senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Sayyed Ali Khamenei, warned that Iran would act, with or without Russian support, to prevent the corridor’s realisation.
The opening of the Zangezur corridor by the United States is a blow not so much to Iran’s interests as to China’s strategic communications.
The implementation of this project effectively blocks part of the east-west transport route within the framework of China’s „One Belt, One Road“ initiative.
This is going to be an interesting one to see play out. I’m not sure to what extent Iran would really be able to go in order to frustrate this work. Not gonna lie though, I’m a little skeptical that this will come to fruition in the foreseeable future even without Iranian interference.
