**First came the fake headline: Maia Sandu, Moldova’s pro-Western president, had bought sperm from Elton John and Ricky Martin. Then came the wave of Russian websites treating it as fact.**
Within days, prosecutors uncovered a vote-buying app linked to Kremlin-backed operatives. This wasn’t new. But it was bigger and bolder.
The timing could not be more critical. On September 28, Moldovans will elect a new parliament; one that must steer the country through years of EU accession talks and reforms.
For President Maia Sandu, former World Bank economist who has led the country as president since 2020, and her pro-European liberal reformist Party of Action and Solidarity, securing a parliamentary majority is essential to keep Moldova on its Western trajectory. For Russia, it’s the last real chance to derail it.
After three elections in Moldova marked by interference, the Kremlin is escalating; pumping in cash, flooding social media, and backing proxy parties to fracture the vote.
The outcome will test whether Europe can defend its neighborhood from creeping Russian control.
# The new phase of hybrid war
Russia’s latest moves show just how far its hybrid war has evolved. The disinformation campaign targeting Maia Sandu was engineered for maximum cultural impact.
WatchDog Moldova, the country’s leading watchdog on Kremlin interference, traced it to “Russian-controlled networks” designed to weaponize “identity-based provocation.”
The goal was not persuasion but polarisation, using fake celebrity scandal to trigger backlash among conservative voters and flood the infosphere ahead of the election.
Just days later, Moldovan prosecutors uncovered a Telegram-based app called Taito allegedly used by Kremlin-linked networks to coordinate payments to voters in exchange for political support.
The app functioned like a political loyalty platform, allowing users to register votes cast, check off campaign activities, and receive payments via intermediaries.
Authorities have linked the scheme to figures previously connected with the banned pro-Russian Victory bloc, and police have already seized cash, bank cards, and devices believed to be part of the operation.

100 yrs from now some random US vice-president will nonchalantly say “*If your democracy can be destroyed with a few hundred thousand dollars of digital advertising from a foreign country, then it wasn’t very strong to begin with*”.. only to forget it wasn’t a few hundred bucks, it wasn’t a normal „digital advertising“ and it really doesn’t matter the amount of money but rather the idea itself.
There are (rare) moments in my life when I feel like all the arguments, all the history, everything I know and everything I learned is useless.. and in those particular moments the peasant inside of me feels like spitting right between the eyes of the other person. That’s it. No discussion, no arguments, no debate. A plain and simple „fuck off“. Between the eyes.
Good luck to our brothers in Moldova 🙏❤ we know those aren’t a few bucks and we understand the struggle. There’s a special place in hell for Putin, Vance, the Orange Grandpa and their little spineless acolytes 🥺
