A real estate investor acting as a mediator between 2 countries at war who doesn’t speak either language? No way!

    3. Stupidity coupled with corruption sprinkled with Kompromat on a paid asset.

      And this is the result.

    4. InternationalMany795 on

ha ha. I’ll predict that this meeting in Alaska will never happen. Then Trump will say again how disappointed he is in his buddy Putin.

That Witkoff, a real estate developer with zero diplomatic experience, zero knowledge of Russia or Russian history, zero understanding of Putin’s background and world view, and zero understanding of the language of either side in the conflict…in short, a man with zero qualifications whatsoever for the job he is attempting and abjectly failing to do… _may_ have „misunderstood“ is as unsurprising as the fact that the Epstein files show Trump is a child rapist.

I am just not going to be surprised if Alaska is returned to Russia later this week.

Trump has surrounded himself with these incompetent fools that do his bidding and are not going to challenge him. Unfortunatelly, he also has to rely on these same incompetent fools to handle and manage all the complex issues the US is facing. It’s only going to get worse.

    8. Raspberries-Are-Evil on

The most amazing but not surprising part is how the Republican Senate just allows all of this massive incompetence to continue.

    9. I have no doubt about the incompetency of this current administration where the sole requirement is sycophancy.

That said, it is also a common counter-intelligence strategy for Putin to communicate and leak one set of circumstances and then shortly afterwards announce a completely different set.  It undermines the US position and causes confusion.

Either way, the Russian abandonment of all Ukrainian territories and a withdrawal to the border that was in place in 2014 needs to be the line drawn by the US.  Anything else reinforces that armed invasion is a permissible way to gain territory in the 21st century and will cause further global chaos (Gaza, Taiwan, etc.).  It also undermines the denuclearization pact signed by Ukraine which is guaranteed by the US.

Putin lies to insult people.  He is being countered by people that work for the most lying liar that the world has seen for a couple thousand years. It is like an unstoppable force vs immovable object of stupid.

    11. Who would’ve thought a shaddy real estate guy from New York with zero government or foreign policy experience would screw this up.

    12. Proof-Ad-8968 on

This is the dumbest pantomime ever. Epstein cover-up distraction undermined by complete farce of failed diplomatic effort.

    13. Monkeyhonker on

Is it because he didn’t bring his own translator and had to rely on one supplied by putler?

    14. Lol he probably said ‘if you give me back alaska i’ll stop where i am for now in Ukraine’. And this trip is to cut the ribbon.

Every single appointee is a dummy. Including the dummy in chief. Gotta wonder who’s really the handler

      😂

Trained KGB officer vs real estate developer, what can possibly go wrong. The Trump administrationen is making the US look like absolute fools, beyond belief

    16. The bush league level this administration is operating at is in full display with Witkoff and his envoy.

Usually when you meet a head of state each side brings their own translator.  It keeps a level playing field, and ensures that no mistranslations or „side conversations“ occurr.

When Witkoff went, they just „used“ the same translator that Putin was using.  Think about that for a minute.  A confrontational counterpart who you’re going to trust blindly.

Minor league bullshit at it’s best.

    17. > Bild’s sources say this could have been the result of Witkoff misinterpreting what Putin said about a „peaceful withdrawal“ from Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts: Russia is demanding the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from these oblasts, but Witkoff thought the proposal was for Russian troops to withdraw from there.

    18. SunflowerMoonwalk on

      > „Witkoff doesn’t know what he’s talking about,“ the German tabloid quotes an anonymous Ukrainian official as saying. According to Bild, it’s an assessment shared by „representatives of the German government“.

      Lol. Sounds about right.

    19. Keep in mind that Bild is a right wing conservative, populist shithole. So you should take anything coming from there with a Grain of Salt.

#America’s most incompetent administration in history, brought to you by Donald J Trump

    21. badstuffaround on

Putin has the same aims and demands but Trump and his misfits seem to after every new call or meeting with Putin get everything wrong.

    23. babakadouche on

Of course he did. This whole administration has the cumulative IQ of a potato.

    24. Administration full of “yes” men and women aren’t intelligent enough to negotiate with professionals? Say it ain’t so…

    25. albanyman518 on

I’m seriously starting to believe that the purpose of the current administration is to completely destroy America’s perception amongst the world.

    26. apearlj1234 on

Hard to believe another Trump appointee has no idea of what the fuck they are doing

    27. The_Phaedron on

For those who aren’t reading past the headline.

Ukrainian *Pravda* is reporting on a story originally from German *Bild* publication.

      > Bild reports that Russia has not abandoned its demand for complete control over **Crimea and Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk and Kherson oblasts** prior to any ceasefire, and has only agreed to a „sectoral“ ceasefire.
      >
      > However, in peace proposals leaked to the media appeared willing to discuss a ceasefire after the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces **only from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.**

That’s the core of the story.

An unnamed UA official is quoted as saying:

      > „Witkoff doesn’t know what he’s talking about“

*Bild* says that this view is shared by representativef of Germany’s government, but doesn’t name them.

To be clear, this is a *very* plausible story, but also *Bild* is a tabloid with a history of editorializing and framing for maximum sensationalism.

I happen to think that what’s being described here is most-likely true. At the same time, I think that we need to apply a critical eye, even when a story aligns with our views, and keep this one in the *“probably true, but needs better reporting before I accept it fully as established fact“* pile.

Remember when people valued intelligence and reason, and voted for people who were smarter than themselves because they realized that was what was best for society? This is the result of decades of anti-intellectualism and voting for the people you’d want to have a beer with, instead of voting for the people who are good at governing the nation.
