      JD Vance has criticised Sir Keir Starmer’s proposal to recognise a Palestinian state as he said the UK and the US had “some disagreements” on how to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza.

      The vice-president arrived in the UK on Friday morning and is due to spend the weekend with David Lammy, the foreign secretary, at his country residence of Chevening, Kent, before a family holiday in the Cotswolds.

      They held an hour of formal talks on the Middle East and Ukraine. Vance was critical of the UK’s changed position on the recognition of a Palestinian state.

      He told Lammy that he did not know “what it would mean” for the UK to recognise a Palestinian state given there was no functioning government in Gaza. He added that the US would not change its position.
