AI tech is increasingly reaching nearly every aspect of the criminal justice system. It is being used in facial recognition systems to identify suspects; in “predictive policing” strategies to formulate patrol routes; in courtrooms to assist with case management; and by public defenders to cull through evidence. But while advocates point to an increase in efficiency and fairness, critics raise serious questions around privacy and accountability.

    2. Lol, of course not , everytime i read these kinds of AI articles, i.replace <policy and courts > with <aggressive legal AI vendor> seeks to make fat commission on enrolling municipal services, with janl AI platform..

      Sometimes American capitalism is cringe.

    3. Shouldn’t the question really be „is AI ready?“ It definitely isn’t. It’s so undercooked for anything like this.

    4. Will the police start arresting shrubs and rocks that are misidentified as having the faces wanted criminals?

      Ready? It’s built for it!

It’s been charging and convicting people using made up bullshit since time immemorial (hair analysis, shaken baby syndrome, bite mark analysis etc).

No, the system is not ready. Just like the Trump regime is not ready to release the Epstein files…

    7. One of the most backwards and tech illiterate political groups in a country decades behind others on laws and protections for tech is going heavy into AI…. You dont need an AI learning model to tell you how this can only end one way….

    8. The data being dumped into these models is at best skewed and at worse biased/bigoted data. This only gives the courts the free pass for not doing the most basic parts of their jobs, and when innocent people are locked up or a cruel or unusual punishment is issued, they will just blame it on “AI” and just tell them to appeal. This should be illegal

    9. No. No they are not. Especially with the fascist freaks running the show right now.

    11. No. It’s always no, regardless of the industry/system/whatever. The AI behind it is also never ready. Stop asking.

    12. Not even close. Part of my job requires data modification, and while it *can* aid in smaller tasks, it regularly modifies things outside of the initially requested scope of modifications.

I asked an AI to design me a cool desktop wallpaper and it still couldnt. I regenerated the same image like 8 times asking it for smaller text, and it just couldnt figure it out.

If it cant design a wallpaper for my desktop, I probably wouldn’t let it defend me in court.

    14. I am all in favor of EVERYONE having easy and cheap access to the absolute best lawyer representation. This will dramatically level the playing field between the rich and the poor. No longer will the law only give preferential treatment to those that have the most money. AI can clearly help remove corruption in our legal system. Having every citizen be heard, understood, represented, and given the CORRECT treatment, will help to bring justice to everyone. No longer will you be able to bend the laws in your favor simply by having the money to afford a better lawyer. This is a great thing for humanity. People will regain their rights and have their case fully heard to the best of the courts ability.

As long as they don’t care whether or not the people they arrest, fine, imprison, torture, or kill are actually guilty. Which, clearly, they don’t and never have.

No, it’s not ready. Not by a long shot. Humans make enough errors as it is, an AI does not yet have the proper ability to handle important issues of kind of magnitude.
