Hallo R/ArmenienAnwesend

    1. These guys are nothing less than scum. They’ll rip off anyone, Armenian or not, if they can. They try with locals, tourists, Diaspora Armenians, etc. Ignoring them is the only way to go since there is not enough enforcement to get these assholes off of airport property.

You’ve reported the son of a bitch to a police station, but won’t change a lot since you won’t be around to actually go to court and take legal action.

You should’ve gone for the Yandex option instead of trying to save 200 AMD… just a general lesson not related only to Armenia, but never enter a car in a developing country’s airport based on an unofficial negotiation late at night.

Luckily, there are few other places to get scammed this badly so you had the worst unfortunately at the beginning. For the rest of the trip, use Gg and Yandex Taxi and enjoy.

Literally every single country in the world has these taxi scams at the airport.

This isn’t a taxi scam. This is a serious crime, possibly an attempted kidnapping. The only right thing to do here is to call the police.

    4. Another week, another post about taxi airport scam.

This has been going on since the collapse of the Soviet union. If those morons can’t get rid of them at the airport exits they should have employees in arrival gates warning tourists about the scam at very least.

    5. Only advice possible: use Yandex.Taxi only.
And I’m curious what will police do (:

Thats gross, never ever trust people trying to offer taxi rides on the street, thats not just a scam its also a crime, really sorry that happened

God forbid someone from a 3rd world country makes a living wage off of taxi driving, 16000 equivalent is perfectly normal for airport to main city in Europe, even a bit cheap in some cases.

I don’t see the issue, you’d never complain about paying this much in Europe but because we Armenians are poor and barbaric we deserve to get paid 1/10th of that compared to the civilized European knights.

Annoys me to no end when these westerners go to poor countries, scam the population by paying them literally 5 dollars for a 40 minute drive, then complain when they demand more, such an EVIL SCAM they are committing by wanting enough money to live in one of the most expensive cities in Eastern Europe.

Damn, that sucks and i feel very bad that it is how we met you in the country.
As people said here already, only use yandex taxi, airport taxis are scams in general, i once had similar experience in Kazachstaan although that guy didnt try to kidnap us at least.
Glad that you reported it to police. I actually had some experience with police last year there and was surprised how proactive they were for even very small crimes. So hopefully they will search for that guy and at least scare him off for future.

    9. Your fault thinking that a guy in BMW will charge less than Yandex (1700 is the cheapest with old Opel car probably)…you already had the app, so you were aware of the scam situation and people in this sub warning about taking taxis from the airport without the app.

    10. Call the police and ask for English speaker, or better go by yourself. Nothing will happen to you there, you may save the next victim.

Post it on Armenian facebook groups, your story may get enough reaction that someone in charge may take an action.

      edit:

      complain email sent to press(at)police.am

you guys can do the same.

    11. Man, it’s the same car from the month-old post.
I get that people generally shouldn’t trust people who offer taxi rides outside the airport.
But it’s a worrying tendency that the same guy is doing the same illegal stuff over and over, and is getting away with it.

    12. Easy way to fix all this. Armenia should develop a metro to the airport into the city center. Would solve all this nonsense and it’s a great job boosting infrastructure project. Civil engineering needs to be strengthened in Armenia,

    13. You got the license plate so now do the right thing and report it to the police.

Police here doesn’t mess around, they’ll get it sorted
